Washington credits postgraduate supervised experience. That means the clock starts after your qualifying degree is conferred and while you hold an active LMHCA credential, not on your first day at a practicum site.
The second condition is the supervisor. WAC 246-809-234 sets who is allowed to provide the supervision that counts. If your supervisor does not meet those criteria, the hours they oversee are not creditable, and there is no way to retroactively repair that. Confirm the credential before the first session rather than at application time.
Most associates are on the standard 3,000-hour path. Two things change the number. A CACREP-accredited degree reduces the requirement, and it reduces rather than adds, which is the single most common misunderstanding we see. Substance use disorder professional experience reduces the total as well.
This date counts 36 months from the day your associate credential was issued, using the duration requirement in WAC 246-809-230. It is an estimate. The Washington Department of Health makes the final determination on whether your experience and hours qualify.
The 1,200 direct client contact hours are not a separate requirement stacked on top of the 3,000. They are a minimum share of it. The remaining time can be case documentation, consultation, treatment planning, staffings, and the other non-contact work that fills a clinical week.
That structure is why associates who track a single running total miss the problem until late. You can be at 2,600 hours overall and still be several hundred short on direct contact, and the only fix at that point is more months of caseload.
Immediate supervision is counted separately again, and 100 hours across 36 months works out to roughly one hour every other week with no gaps. Vacations, supervisor turnover, and light-caseload stretches are where that number quietly slips.
